"What a beautiful book! It's incredible how you managed to reach this result with the pieces of the puzzle of interviews, photographs, conversations and all kinds of information. . Thank you very much for the undoubtedly a lot of work you put into this."A. G. Neighbor of Unitas Tuinwijk

In the book, a house in Unitas Tuinwijk tells stories about the neighbors who live there.
Through these stories we can read what life was like during the war, the post-war or the pandemic, but above all the changes in lifestyle in the last 100 years.

"I was born after a war when people needed more houses.

Some architects who spent the war years in Paris, Amsterdam or London returned with new ideas.

There was a young architect who proposed English-style houses: "they will combine the advantages of urban and rural life, they will have a front and back garden and an environment with lots of vegetation. Yes, this will make people's lives better!" , thought Eduard van Steenbergen."

In this context, Unitas Tuinwijk was born 100 years ago. During these 100 many people came and went, but the houses remain. They see us in our intimate environment, they experience the changes in our lifestyle within their own walls through the generations... What better testimony could there be to tell us our own story?

This kaleidoscopic illustrated book tells many stories within a story, allowing us to glimpse the history and changes in lifestyle through the memories of neighbors who have shaped and continue to shape this heritage district.

Luisa Bernal has delved into the memories of her neighbors from different
generations, from photographs to old original documents and information that makes them better understand the meaning of the neighborhood...

An illustrated book by Nele Willems covering architecture, customs, history and lifestyle.

The result is a fictional story based on real events.

A book supported by ErfgoedLAB with three parts: the story with illustrations, a photo album with photographs related to the story and a final piece on the context of the garden districts.

From everywhere a little

"Mila van de Frietjes has to talk about her origins in class next Friday.
But she believes he is "simply" Belgian.
Or... could it be that we all have a migrant origin...?"

This bilingual Spanish/Dutch illustrated book arises from the workshop for familiesHispanic-Belgian taught by Laura Vargas.

During four sessions, we worked on diversity and identity. The stories and drawings of the children who participated in the workshop are part of this book.

For me it was a challenge to combine all the ingredients in a simple story: the message that “we are all from nowhere and a little bit of everywhere”, the relationship with the grandparents, the story that the children collectively imagined - full of objects magical -, the elements that appear in children's drawings and a few touches of history to learn while we read...

I decided to solve it with a culinary metaphor that referred to the fact that the typical dishes of our countries of origin are full of ingredients originating in other continents.

"If the typical dishes are from nowhere completely and from everywhere a little, can you imagine what mixtures will run through the blood of the humans who bring us and take us?"
